Line Stopping Techniques

Our professional line stopping techniques bypass and isolate specific sections of your distribution system for repairs, replacement of pipe, valves and hydrants. The flow stoppage can be accomplished in minutes, without main shutdowns or interruption of service.

Line stopping is the process of blocking flow through a segment of piping. This allows for temporary shutoff and flow control to allow for pipe maintenance. The advantage of the Municipal Pipe Services process of line stopping is that we are able to bypass the area of maintenance and keep your services running without interruption.

We use a unique system at Municipal Pipe Service for our line stopping. Line stops are performed on carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, cast iron, ductile iron, transite/ACP, PVC, concrete cylinder pipe and more. You can see the process we take in the animation below.

Inside a Building
We did two 3" line stops in this water treatment facility. The solinoid valves were shot, so the media was not being regenerated timely. The stops allowed for the valves to be replaced without taking the treatment facility out of service. These stops were made on steel pipe but we can do work on IPS PVC, C900 PVC, DIP, Copper, A/C, Sand Cast.
10" stop
This is a photo of line stopping done for a Rural Water District. The Pipe is 10" SDR-26 PVC pipe. The stop was advantageous so all customers were in constant service. Plus no draining, purging, or rechlorinating was necessary.
16" stop
The pressure on this bullet stopper is 120 psi. The pipe is DI. Fire lines were kept in service. In addition, since the main was always pressurized backflow is not an issue. Neither are boil orders an issue. 1/2" on up are available for immeditate or planned
